A common question we get at C Squared is why we suggest that albums should be released on a Friday. After all, wouldn’t it make sense to release your album during the week to stand out from everyone else?
While we understand the logic, this isn’t the case. Up until 2015, music was released in North America on Tuesdays, mainly due to the Billboard Charts publishing on Wednesday. In other areas of the world, music was released on different days. To combat piracy, the global release date was changed to Friday and Billboard also now tracks from Friday to Thursday of each week.
Even if charting is irrelevant to your band, there are still other reasons to release on a Friday:
– Streaming editorial playlists update on Friday.
– New Release lists on blogs update on Friday.
But most importantly: Music fans *expect* music to come out on Friday. This is also payday for many people and can spur impulse purchases as a result.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that even though we say release your ALBUM on Friday, you should release a single from your album earlier in the week instead. This way your song isn’t swallowed up in the album release cycle and gives your track a chance to shine.
