Psychedelic doom duo COMA HOLE have released a glimpse of their upcoming opus with new single “Alphaholics,” available HERE. A deeply personal track, vocalist and bassist Erika Fir elaborates:
“This song describes the beginning of this tumultuous period of my life. The name for it just kinda came from joking around about what you call yourself when you’re the best alcoholic (hence being an “alpha”). Most of the record deals with tribulations in my relationships, substance abuse and emotional turmoil. This was written specifically about a person who I allowed myself to become a wreck over as the life I had been very accustomed to was falling apart. An alcoholic among other things, I was completely enamored with this person for some reason and it enabled me to partake in drowning in substance abuse with them. It was a miserable time, and it was a time I thought would never end and I’m very happy it is over and has been over for a long time now.
“The lyrics are me speaking to myself saying all the things I know are actually true about the situation but I refuse to let it go. The recurrent line of “you won’t fix him” in every pre chorus is a subconscious echo to realize it’s a fruitless endeavor with a chorus beckoning “I know, time won’t change that feeling at all” with alternating endings in each reprise saying “But I can’t let go/walking on that tightrope/time to let go”; being how horrible this person made me feel despite thinking all it will take is time for them to display they care. The lyrical progression reflects coming to the realization I have to get out of this situation because it’s just a weight that only crushes me. “
Hand Of Severance, arrives on November 1st, 2024. Lyrically and musically intense, the album dives deep into the impact of the outside world on an individual’s state of mind. Hand Of Severance delves into the process of coming to terms with one’s self-destructive behaviors. Haunting vocal layers and estranged, repetitive speaking voices function as pieces of the narrator’s subconscious, and spaced-out, atmospheric bass sections convey feelings of dissociation. The music swings back and forth between a spacey, dissociative sound and intense distorted sections, conveying rage that follows numbness in an endless cycle. Hand Of Severance captures the emotional, psychological essence of doom from an up-close-and-personal perspective.
About COMA HOLE:
From the stone-scattered shores of Rhode Island comes COMA HOLE, a unique doom duo smoking out the underground scene with thick, fuzzed-out grooves destined for bigger stages. Formed in 2018, COMA HOLE pairs the heavily overdriven basslines and powerful vocals of bass druidess Eryka Fir with the thunderously tight drumming of doom devil Steve Anderson. With a debut EP and killer single under their belt, the duo has risen in rank from basement headbangers to sharing the stage with notable psychedelic acts such as HORSEBURNER, HEAVY TEMPLE, TEMPTRESS, MONTE LUNA, and more.
Since it’s release in September 2021, the band has been busy clawing up the coast with “Old Climb”, a ceiling-smashing track that had listeners craving their self-titled EP, released April 2022. With impeccable production value and lyrics that ring clear over a wall of fuzz, “Old Climb” quickly found homes across the globe in places like Ghost Cult Magazine’s Crushing Underground Compilation Vol 2, internet radio station Transmissions From the Underground (Australia), Left of the Dial KTEQ91.3 (South Dakota), and the More Fuzz podcast (Nantes, France). The towering twosome continued to attack 2022 at the New England Stoner Doom Fest (Connecticut, May 2022) and are scheduled to play Maryland Doom Fest 2022, in addition to regular touring. An audible blend of filthy riffs and energetic percussion, the two create their own uniquely grungy brew of stoner doom.
