In order to implement effective and higher-level music marketing strategies it’s imperative that the basics are fully optimized to obtain the best possible results from these methods. The basics being referred to here include, but are not limited to, strong social media profiles and high quality assets. Fundamentally the music itself must be of a high quality as this is the ‘product’ being promoted, but it is also important not to neglect any accompanying assets.

In the digital age of music, releases are very much judged by their cover in the sense that poor quality assets may be taken as an indicator of the quality of the music itself. With so much choice, as an artist, catching and retaining interest is essential to growth. This applies not only in terms of acquiring and building a fan base – it is also relevant to networking whether that be with fellow bands and artists or music industry professionals.

As a band, one of the initial steps that should be taken is identifying and aligning your goals. If an important aim for the band is to push for growth, with an understanding of the time, energy and financial investment required, then covering the basics is absolutely essential as without completing this step it will impede your progress. Industry professionals want to ensure they are working with those who are dedicated. They want to know that a band or artist understands the quality of work they need to produce and are willing to put in the effort. A quick glance over a band’s social media profiles, for example, can provide an A&R, a promoter, or even a music fan, with an impression of this.

A useful exercise to undertake is to consider how major bands operate. Take a look at what it is that your favourite bands are doing, especially those who are signed to major labels. A quick view over the social media profiles of these bands is an easy way to start to notice what works well. While not all of the strategies used by these major acts will necessarily be relevant to your band specifically, many aspects are transferable.

It is entirely understandable why many bands may struggle with executing the basics thoroughly especially if they have less experience with the business side of the music industry.
