Welcome back to our insightful series, “Getting Ready for PR.” In this installment, our Chief Publicist Holly Royle takes the stage to guide you through the essential materials you need before embarking on your PR journey.

The Power of Visuals

Visual media is not just an add-on; it’s a cornerstone of your release. The quality of your visuals, including album art, single covers, and band photos, plays a crucial role in attracting new fans and securing media coverage. Remember, the media is hesitant to promote low-quality assets, as it reflects poorly on them too.

Focus on high-resolution and well-designed visual assets. If you’re working with photographers or artists, discuss the required dimensions and file sizes, especially for print media. Also, keep in mind the specific requirements for physical merchandise like CDs and vinyl.

Crafting Compelling Artwork

Your release’s artwork can significantly influence its reception. Whether it’s for an album, EP, or single, prioritize high quality in both design and resolution. To effectively communicate your vision to the artist, consider creating mood boards that showcase preferred styles, colors, and layouts.

Choosing the right artist is crucial. Ensure their style aligns with your vision. Get recommendations from fellow artists and clearly discuss the necessary sizes and file formats (preferably .jpg or .png) to avoid inconvenient conversions later on.

Strategic Photo Sessions

For PR purposes, landscape photos (ideally in 16:9 ratio) are preferred due to their compatibility with most websites and media platforms. However, social media often demands portrait orientation. Therefore, aim for a mix of both during your photoshoots.

Key tips for quality band photos include:

  • Clear visibility of all members’ faces (unless you’re a masked group).
  • Choosing a background that reflects your style and genre.
  • Planning outfits, makeup, and hairstyles in advance for cohesive, well-composed shots.
  • Ensuring excellent lighting, whether outdoors in natural light or indoors with professional setups.

Essential Biographical Information

Your background information is vital in convincing the press to pay attention to your music. Here’s what you need for an effective band bio and press release:

  • Band history, including major events and collaborations.
  • Musical and thematic influences.
  • Details about the specific release.
  • Key themes and meanings in your songs.
  • An existing bio, if available.
  • Band lineup, with full names preferred.
  • Links to social media, streaming platforms, and websites.
  • Complete discography.
  • A brief quote about the release.
  • Information on any guest features in your upcoming release.

Remember, the more information you provide, the better. Don’t assume we know everything about you, but also strive for conciseness to highlight the most important aspects of your story.
